Icon Info should show Kind as "Unknown". Your ICONS/Desktop file has probably been messed up by some application which automatically added its icon. If this is the problem, then one cure is to replace the current Desktop with an earlier, non-messed, version (like the one on your '6.0.1 diskettes).

System probelm
Various desktop icons do not show--device and folder icons are an example. One can set in the properties but the default gear will remain. Panel icons work better.
